2018 CAS Interdisciplinary Research Conference: BS Math, BS Bio bag awards

On its 6th year, the College of Arts and Sciences took the college’s annual interdisciplinary research conference to another level. Following this year’s theme “Alagwa: Catapulting Innovations in CAS’ Research Culture,” the eight sets of student research were presented at the CBA Auditorium, April 27.

Researchers from the Bachelor of Science in Mathematics, Frances C. Mora and Junell J. Patuloy, were hailed Best Researchers as they impressed the panel of evaluators with their study on the application of Floyd – Warshall Algorithm in transporting agricultural products.

Mora and Patuloy proposed an optimal route in transporting agricultural products to Sentrong Pamilihan ng Produktong Agrikultura sa Quezon Inc. for farmers and dealers of Sariaya, Quezon, which they were able to prove to be more efficient than the existing routes that the farmers and dealers are using. 

This is repeat victory for BS Math as they also seized the Best Researcher award in the 2017 Interdsciplinary Research Conference.

Meanwhile, Govinda Lou O. Bernardo, Darlene Faye B. Cadao and Marvin D. Menor of the Bachelor of Science in Biology bagged the Best Presenter award. Their study entitled “Biochemical Screening and Bioactivities of Selected Plants from Mt. Banahaw De Lucban, Quezon Province” determined the biochemical properties and bioactivities of Knema acuminata, Ficus guyeri, Dracontomelon edule, and Cratoxylum sumatranum ssp. Sumatranum.



Other research presented include “Huwag Tularan, Pusher Ako: Influence of War on Drugs TV News Reportage on the Safety and Security of Selected Viewers” by Charlete Ann U. Soriano and Ma. Lilet C. Mia (BA Comm.); “Impact Analysis of Selected Extension Projects Of Psychology Program in Southern Luzon State University” by Wally T. Dela Cerna and Jeanel Keith A. Jimenez (AB Pyschology); “Historical Development of Lucban Hat’s Sambalilong Buntal: A Proposed Socio- Cultural Intervention Plan” by Catherine A. Peňero (AB History); “Ibayong Mundo: A Documentary Film on the Constructed Identity of Selected Filipina Domestic Helpers in Hong Kong” by Marielle Biacora, John Paul Saliendra and Jemimah Ruth Teope (BA Comm); “Macroinvertebrate Diversity in San Juan De Jesus, Progreso and Butaguin Rivers in Gumaca, Quezon as Stream Health Indicator” by Sedney S. Mendoza (BS Biology); and “On the Laplacian Energy and Color Signless Laplacian Energy of Book Graph Bn” by Mark Joel L. Rubina and John Ray A. Buenvenida (BS Math).

Prof. Heidi Baraan-Gonzales of the Batangas State University, Prof. Cheeno Marlo Sayuno of the University of the Philippines-Los Baños, and Mr. Erwin Don Racasa of the MGB-DENR served as panel of evaluators. They were impressed with the methodical studies that promised practical application to the community.

Meanwhile, Prof. Julieta Lindo, a faculty of the CAS and a recipient of FullBright Scholarship, delivered the plenary address. Ms. Minerva Sagsagat, a student Master of Arts in Applied Linguistics, gave a special research presentation.

“Alagwa” is the 6th Interdisciplinary Research Conference organized by the CAS Research Council. The conduct of the conference started in 2012. This year’s conference is organized under the supervision of Prof. Rene P. Zubieto, CAS Research and Extension Services Coordinator. 

The Languages, Literature and Humanities Department headed by Dr. Shiela Manzanilla served as convener of the conference. Mr. Gino Cabrera, Prof. Jed Marqueses and Prof. Julia Lea Radovan served as moderators of the event.
